The school is situated in the township of Gununa on Mornington Island. It is the largest of the 22 Islands that make up the Wellesley Island group in the southeast of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia. |

Mornington Island State School has contributed toward a trade training centre at Spinifex College in Mount Isa. The centre was an initiative of the Federal Government and it is envisaged that students of Mornington Island students will be able to access this centre to further expand their educational opportunities in the future when the centre is complete and programs in place.
